This is a story of flight,

a story of roots,

a story of grace.

I am the wandering child·

Every journey knows a secret destination.

I'll find my way without a map, rely

on memory embedded in my mother's embrace

on stormy nights at the foot of the Alps.

I'll find home in the heart

of a rose, retrieve my soul,

anchored in the still point

where psyche rests,

the presence of mystery so luminous

I'm infused with its essence.

I walk the labyrinth, let

go of confined desires.

I rip the vine intertwined around

the umbilical, liberate the letters of

my name. They soar above the ocean

for the falcon to reclaim.

I'm dancing the dream

on the brink of barren ravaged realms.

From volcanic pumice and pure clay

I reap scrumptious blossoms of love,

earth's sweet and savory ambrosia.

たしなみのお話

わたしは迷い子だ

どの旅も秘密の目的地がある

地図なしに道をみつけよう

アルプスのふもとで嵐の夜

母の腕のなかで深く根づいた記憶をたよりに

こころのなかにわたしの魂を救う

バラ咲く家を見つけよう

こころを整える

静かなところで投錨した

神秘の存在は発光している

わたしにはそのエキスがただよっている

迷路をあるく

内にこもった欲心を駆けさせよ

へその緒にまきついた蔓をひきちぎり

わたしの名前の文字から

自由になる　　それは大洋上に上昇し

馴らしたタカとなる

わたしは荒廃した王国の殺風景な崖のうえで

夢を舞っている

噴火の軽くて混じりけのない土から

わたしは美味な愛の花を手にいれる

地球の甘く香り高い神々の食べ物を

Hélène Cardona is the author of six books, most recently Life in Suspension and Dreaming My Animal Selves (both from Salmon Poetry); and the translations Beyond Elsewhere (Gabriel Arnou-Laujeac, White Pine Press), winner of a Hemingway Grant, Ce que nous portons (Dorianne Laux, Éditions du Cygne); as well as Walt Whitman's Civil War Writings for WhitmanWeb. The Birnam Wood, her translation of El Bosque de Birnam (Consell Insular d'Eivissa) by her father José Manuel Cardona is forthcoming from Salmon Poetry in 2018.

She was awarded Fellowships from the Goethe-Institut and the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, the International Book Award in Poetry, the USA Best Book Award in Poetry, 2 Pinnacle Book Awards for the Best Bilingual Poetry Book, and 2 Readers' Favorite Book Awards in Poetry.

She holds a Master's in American Literature from the Sorbonne and has contributed to The London Magazine, Washington Square Review, World Literature Today, Poetry International, The Brooklyn Rail's InTranslation, Hayden's Ferry Review, Asymptote, and The Warwick Review. Acting credits include Chocolat, Jurassic World, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Hundred-Foot Journey, etc. For Serendipity, she co-wrote with Peter Chelsom & Alan Silvestri the song Lucienne, which she also sang.
