ブルガリアの詩人デミトリ・アナキエフと日本詩人吉村侑久代が「結」について俳句を響かせる。１００句は日本語、ブルガリア語、そして英語で書かれている。

INTRODUCTION

"My haiku mastery comes to

the fore in related forms"

Basho

Rensaku is a well-known technique for thematically linking tanka poems in order to increase the narrative capacity of the short poems. However, this poetic method is also known in Western poetry - the thematic connection of 15 sonnets is called a "sonnet wreath", and literary theory considers a "sonnet wreath" to have the narrative capacity of a prose novel. If 15 sonnets (i.e. 120 connected verses, i.e. 1440 syllables) have the capacity of a novel, then surely a full-length Rensaku of 100 haiku (300 verses, i.e. theoretically 1700 syllables) also has the capacity of a narrative of a novel.

So here are the challenges for aspiring haiku poets (whether writing Rensaku solo, in pairs, or in a group) who have something to say. Full-length Rensaku One Small Knot was very well received among my friends.

So Dragan Ristic - the thirty-year-editor of the Haiku Newspaper from Niš - wrote to me that it is a "fascinating work", while Stephen Gill, a British poet from Kyoto and former long-time director of the Genjuan Haibun competition, wrote to me that "this work requires high class poets". Here we must also remember Basho's words: "Every student of mine can write equal to my haiku. My haiku mastery comes to the fore in related forms."

It is probably for these reasons that there are very few full-length Rensaku in the history of international haiku. The first was written by the Portuguese poet Casimirо de Brito and Ban'ya Natsuishi, and the second is now between Ikuyo Yoshimura and myself. There aren't many novelists among haiku poets! But it is the same among sonnet writers: in the history of world literature, only one full-length sonnet wreath has been written so far.

For all that has been written, Ikuyo Yoshimura is right when she says that Rensaku is the ideal method for a "haiku workshop" because it emphasizes both imagination and thematic analysis, which are very necessary for a haiku poet. Beginning poets write smaller forms of Rensaku – from 6 to 20 haiku. I wrote dozens of them myself. It must also be said that Rensaku is an ideal vehicle for cultural exchange. And it must be remembered that poetry, including haiku, has a social function.

Rensaku, DUET OF KNOTS was originally written in English. Then Ikuyo translated it into Japanese, and now I translated it into Bulgarian.

Translating 100 haiku is no easy task. I have written only some notes on the translations that seemed necessary to me, leaving everything else to the intuition of the reader. Only a trilingual edition can reveal all the secrets this manuscript hides, and I hope for such a book.

　玉の二重奏

"Congratulations on the birth of "Duet of Gems"

Mariko, myself, and my husband met CLELIA IFRIM for the first time in Bucharest, Romania. She is a dear friend of mine who has since performed as a duet with me.

Mr. Suzuki was introduced to me by an acquaintance of mine, Kentaro Tanaka, a well-known modern poet (and a fellow poet of my younger brother Mitsuhiro Ota). The poem given by Akira Suzuki was transparent and I thought it was from a soul of young boy. I'm happy that Mariko's effort made this possible for these two. Two particularly sensitive people published ``Duet of Gems,'' a soulful work that echoes at the height of its poetry, and I was overwhelmed by its strange resonance.

CLELIA IFRIM entrusts his poetic soul to a bird that goes to Siberia and goes on the path of the majestic cosmos. The puzzle in the darkness makes it possible for a purple rose to bloom and be loved, and its home is the grass of a field. Poetic soul to gems acquires the ability to trap itself within its own walls.

Akira Suzuki's open heart sees compassion from the universe. He responds to the love of the stars, which send light to everyone equally, and discovers that even when humans have abandoned them, they have not abandoned their splendor. In order to establish days of paradise, the claim is a love for the wonderful fusion of nature with plants and animals. A place surrounded by friends who are like gems of bliss. Many mountains of. stars, flowers. This overwhelming presence, sense of justice, and assertion. Words spun from a difficult position. I pray that the sound of their flutes will echo throughout the skies of the world.

ダンテ・マッフィアは２０２３年３月現在で１６０００句の俳句を詠み、すべてが日本語に翻訳されている。
また短歌、書評、小説、詩も翻訳されている。同年１月にはJUNPA詩歌祭で俳句リサイタルを行った。
『万句集』には１００００句所収されているが、まずは精選した３８０句を三冊にまとめたので、それを読んでいただきたい。『夢を象る』『夢を養う』『夢の旅』である。異才ともいわれるダンテ・マッフィアが俳句に魅せられ、そこから『新俳句』のコンセプトにいたるまでの道筋をともに歩みたい。キンドルはここ。

 Amir Or is an extraordinal poet in Israel. Maki Starfield is an talented poet in Japan. Their poems are, of course, not related with each other. Duet of Polygon

INTRODUCTION

Thinking of how to begin this introduction to a collaborative book between an American writer--me--and a Japanese writer--Maki Starfield--I found myself writing a haiku:

Dreamed of Kerouac:

"Haiku is the deep night sky

Packed in a thimble"

The lines in quotation marks are mine, not Kerouac's: my poem dreams that Jack Kerouac appeared to me in a dream and spoke them to me.

The story of how haiku became an obsession for many American writers--including my late wife, Adelle--would have to begin with the appearance from 1949-1952 of R.H. Blyth's monumental, four-volume book, Haiku. Harold G. Henderson's An Introduction to Haiku appeared a few years later, in 1958, the same year that Kerouac's Dharma Bums appeared. Importantly, the hero of Dharma Bums was the haiku-reading-and-writing Japhy Ryder (Gary Snyder). The first three letters of the name of Kerouac's hero suggest "Japanese": Jap; spoken, the name is almost Japanese writer.

Kerouac and other Beat figures were also reading William Carlos Williams with great approval, and one remembers Williams' vehement opposition to the "English" tradition in poetry and particularly to iambic pentameter, which he called in a letter to Harold Norse "the last stand" of "the Establishment." Even a "counted," seventeen-syllable haiku does not sound at all like iambic pentameter--but it is not "free verse" either: it is a form. Williams' not always fully lucid endorsement of what he called the "variable foot" suggests that he wished to find a "definite form" which was also--indefinite, "variable." Haiku, particularly in its American versions, is like that: it is a form, but--in Kerouac's phrase--"like the sea" it can take many shapes. Nicholas Virgilio's stunning, minimalist piece,

out of the water...

out of itself,

is deeply moving, yet, from the point of view of the complex organ music of English literature, it scarcely seems a poem at all.

At this point in history certain aspects of Beat style have, alas, been assimilated into the mainstream of American culture, but for the Beats themselves, to be was to be other. Haiku answered the need for a poetic form which was simultaneously traditional and other. In the deceptively "simple" form of haiku, Kerouac could find a kind of double escape from the "suffering" he found enunciated in Buddhism. As he merged with the object before him (haiku as immediate description, "the real thing...without literary devices or fanciness of expression"), he lost the ego sense which was the major feature of his suffering--yet, as a meditative form (as in the example from Nicholas Virgilio), haiku was also capable of transcending the world, of escaping it entirely. Indeed, haiku offered Kerouac the pleasures of a religious practice blissfully free of some of the deep problems of Western spirituality. "To the Japanese mind," writes R.H. Blyth, "there does not exist that tremendous gulf between us and God on the one hand, and animals, trees and stones on the other."

It was with all this in my mind that I came upon

cherry blossoms

everywhere

naked women without memory

and

concealed in my heart

calls forth a firefly--

Maki had contacted me with the idea of doing a book and translating some of my poems into Japanese. What does one look for in a translator? I think of the German, Heideggerean word, Stimmung, which means "mood" but which might be extended to mean "attunement." One looks for verbal capacity of course, but beyond that one looks for attunement, a sense that one's "feelings" may be understood even before they are explicitly enunciated. What you want is some kind of spiritual connection--something Kerouac found in Gary Snyder. I found myself experiencing the same thing when I read Maki's work--though, unlike Kerouac, I didn't know Maki as a friend. Indeed, I knew nothing about her except for her writing.

The American experimental poet, Olchar E. Lindsann has called my work "constantly evolving and exploratory." I like to believe that this is true. I am not so much an "experimental" poet as I am an exploratory one, and my explorations have convinced me--it is a kind of mantra--that some parts of the mind don't know what other parts are doing, that mind is fundamentally multiple and frequently contradictory: many voiced. Much of my work has been for this reason collaborative, a mode that allows for different and even dissonant elements to be expressed. The "other" has always been a deep presence in my work, which I do not regard as self expressive--like a Buddhist I would question the very existence of the "self"--but multiple. As they say to the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz when most of his stuffing has been scattered to the wind, "that's you all over."

どのように俳句が多くのアメリカの作家のための妄想になったかの物語（前妻Adelleを含む）は、1949年に始まり1952年にR．H. ブライスの記念碑、4冊の俳句集、ハロルド・G.ヘンダーソンの俳句入門書は数年後の1958年に出版された。同年に ケルアックのDharma Bums が出版された。大切なのはDharma Bums の主人公は、俳句を読んだり書いたりするJaphyライダー（ゲーリー・スナイダー）であった。ケルアックの主人公の名前の最初の３文字は「日本人」を意味する（話し言葉の）ジャブ、ほぼ日本の作家名である。

マキは

マキが僕の詩を日本語にいくつか訳して共著本を作りたいという連絡をとってきた。人は翻訳者の中に何を求めるのだろうか。ドイツ語の、Stimmungというハイデッカーの言葉について考えた。「気分」を意味しているけれども、「調和」とも取れる。人はもちろん、言葉の能力を求めるけれども、それが明示的に表れる前に、そのものを越えて、人の「感情」が理解できるという意識、調和を求める。あなた方が望んでいるものは、ある種類のスピリチュアルな繋がりである－－ケルアックがゲーリー・スナイダーに発見したもの。僕はマキの作品を読んだ時同じ事を経験しているのを発見した－－しかし、ケルアックと違って、友人としてのマキを知らなかった。彼女の作品以外、マキについて何も知らなかった。
