The Junction

From the highway, down to the meadow
led the path. In the ravine, you watched
the sunset brush up against wires, fade.
The State's mark crowned the signpost
and bittercress stems scratched cement.
A country, long-suffering and patient,
lay to the north-east welcoming night.
A doe nibbled brushwood and alder.
Beyond the horizon, you could almost
see a distant lake. In its clouded surface
was the indistinct reflection of a child
whose outline matched yours. Above,
a song hovered over the bridge and
rushes, on mossy tombstones' dates,
Time that escapes biographers and
memory is perhaps the most important:
both a heavy burden and a talisman.

To the left stretched the wild wood.
In it, a bright opening - a gap which
revealed a march, or simply mud or silt.
There, unseen, swarmed the grinning,
unkempt offspring of absurd designs
and schemes. In the distance ruined
bridges and glades showed black. Icy
canals took aim at the cold fringes of
the bay, but failed to hit the city
or the fleet. You know that children
there are born into side streets sharing
rage, cigarette butts, sperm, syringes.

Whitish chimney smoke behind you,
and growing dogs that keep guard
against unwelcome guests. It's late.
Impassable dirt roads wind round
past hollows and debris. Unplastered
brick walls conceal the fires. I guess
if fate has brought you here, you should
accept this territory at the threshold
of home. This triple-junction strewn
with rigid signposts - now outdated,
but one time deadly. The viaduct's
grim arch spans neglected grounds.
Touch the cold grass of childhood.
You are home. Night's shell enfolds
the three-fold sea. It's all gift of grace:
these muddled tines, the sentry no longer
on guard, the air that's longing for a voice.

高速道路から、草地へおりていけば
小道に出た。谷間で、きみは眺めた
夕陽が鉄条網を撫でて暮れていくのを。
国名板が標識に冠せられ
苦菜の茎はセメントをひっかいていた。

ある国、長く苦悩し耐え忍んだ国が、
歓迎の夜には北西に横たわっている。
雌鹿は小枝やハンノキを噛んでいる。
地平線の彼方に、きみは遠くの湖を
目にすることができただろう。
雲を映した水面は、こどもが描く
きみの輪郭と同じ、たどたどしく浮かぶ。
湖上には歌が橋のうえをホバリングし、
突進していく、苔むした墓の刻み日のうえを、
伝記作家から逃れた時と思い出は
たぶん大切このうえない：
両方とも重荷であり護符なのだ・

ひだりには手つかずの森が広がり
そのなかに、明るい裂け目、破れ目が
進軍なのか、泥かシルト(沈泥）なのか
分からないようにした。
そこに、目には見えないが、
不条理な企みと陰謀の不肖の子が
苦しみに歪んだ笑いで移動していた。
遠くには橋が崩れおち、沼地が黒光りしていた。
凍りついた運河は、港の冷たい縁（へり）に向かっていた、
が、街にも船隊にも命中しなかった。きみは知る
子供たちは道端で生まれ、乱暴を、煙草の吸い殻
精液を、注射器を皆で回し合うのを。

きみの後ろの煙突の白煙、
そしてありがたくない客に
警戒むきだしの犬。もう遅いのだ。
通行できない未舗装の道に風は
乾いたくぼみと瓦礫を巻いて吹く。
裸煉瓦は炎を隠している。たぶん
運命がきみを此処に連れてきたのだ、
きみは家の敷居でこの領土を受忍すべきなのだ。
厳正な道標で分けられたこの三重の交点（ジャンクション）
は、いまでは時代遅れだが、
かつては致命的だった。陸橋の無慈悲な
アーチが放擲された土地を差し渡す。
こどものころの冷たい草に触れてみろ。
きみは家にいる。夜の貝殻は三重の海を包んでいる。

それはぜんぶ神の贈り物だ。
これら台無しにされた尖った歯、もう警備しない歩哨、
ひとつの声に焦れたその空気。
