After Ten Years

After ten years…

I will no longer linger in the poets' café,

nor lose myself in the dim corners

where artists leave their shadows to dry.

I will not study the silence of hermits,

nor the hunger of friends

chasing the sweetness of this fleeting world.

I will not delight in the stories of lovers,

nor wait by the ancient door

for old wounds to return wearing new names.

After ten years…

my tears will no longer rise

for the defeated,

nor will the colors of paintings

or the dreams trapped inside them

summon me.

The breath of lovers scattering their temptations

across the courtyards

will no longer beckon.

Instead,

I will build a house

inhabited by someone who is not me—

a house inside myself,

where the names of small plants

quiver,

and learn again

how to grow.

After ten years…

I will not walk,

nor weep,

nor laugh,

nor chant,

nor love.

I will tire of death's lonely gate—

a gate that refuses my colors,

that will not let my roots

taste the soil of this life.

My language will no longer carry my sighs,

nor shape a space within itself

where I may survive

for one more breath.

Why here?

Why now?

Why after ten years?

Why death ?

Translation by Maki Starfield
